Graphitised carbon blacks
Graphitised carbon blacks (GCBs) such as Carbograph, Carbopack and Carbotrap, are non-specific carbon sorbents that are widely used for trace-level applications due to their minimal artefact levels. They vary from very weak to medium/strong – the strongest sorbents exhibit some microporosity, bridging the gap between regular GCBs and carbonised molecular sieves.

Overview
Carbograph, Carbopack and Carbotrap are the most popular GCBs, and each is available in different strengths.
GCBs contain trace levels of metals, which means that they are not 100% inert, and so are less suitable for some labile or highly reactive species such as thiols and monoterpenes. When working with these types of compounds, Markes recommends the optimised inert-coated ‘Odour/Sulfur’ sorbent tube, which is packed with fully inert sorbents.
Care should be taken when working with tubes packed with GCBs, as they are susceptible to formation of fine particles, particularly when subjected to mechanical shock. General good practice should minimise formation – avoid dropping the tubes and ensure tubes are well-protected during storage and transport.
Markes recommends using 40/60 mesh for sorbent tubes and 20/40 mesh for focusing traps. When working with multi-bed tubes/traps, ensure sorbents are packed from the sampling end in order of strength (from weak to strong).
