Enhanced detection of adulterants in coconut oil with HiSorb high-capacity sorptive extraction and ChromSpace

Coconut oil’s complex aroma profile makes it difficult to spot low-level adulteration with cheaper oils. This study shows how HiSorb high-capacity sorptive extraction on Centri 90, coupled with GC–MS and the Smart Subtract application in SepSolve Analytical's ChromSpace software, improves sensitivity and speeds up data review.

Compared with SPME, HiSorb extracts a broader VOC fingerprint and enables longer, parallel extractions for throughput, delivering confident detection of palm oil at just 5% w/w in coconut oil. Reproducibility across probes was excellent (RSDs well below 10%), and algorithmic subtraction cleanly revealed palm-derived markers that were otherwise obscured.
