Solvent-free sample preparation for residual fumigants on foodstuffs: Multi-step enrichment–headspace–trap with gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS)
Presented at SETAC 2022
The poster entitled “Solvent-free sample preparation for residual fumigants on foodstuffs: Multi-step enrichment–headspace–trap with gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS)” was presented by Markes International at the 32nd Annual Meeting of the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC), which was held on 15–19 May 2022 in Copenhagen, Denmark, and online.
Detection of ethylene oxide residues
Residues of pest-control fumigants, such as ethylene oxide, have been found on food, and these can negatively affect consumer health. Levels of ethylene oxide above the European Union maximum residue limit of 0.05 mg/kg have led to several product recalls, at great cost to suppliers.
Consequently, there is a need for a robust, efficient and high-throughput method for extracting and analysing fumigants from foodstuffs.
This poster presents a fully automated, solvent-free, environmentally-conscious technique in which static headspace methodology is enhanced by incorporation of a cryogen-free focusing trap.
